Topic context

Understanding chronic fatigue syndrome

ME/CFS, also called chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis, causes severe fatigue that rest does not relieve, along with problems with thinking and sleep, and symptoms that get worse after physical or mental effort. Many people are housebound or bedbound for periods, and the illness is widely misunderstood.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with chronic fatigue syndrome

Peer support can help with ME/CFS because isolation is common when leaving the house is costly. An online group brings company to you, and you can listen, rest or leave as your energy allows.

Inside the room

What chronic fatigue syndrome groups often cover

  • Crashing after activity, even small things
  • Pacing and living within limits
  • Grief for work, hobbies and friendships
  • Being told to exercise or try harder

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Frequently asked questions

Is there an ME/CFS group?

Not one of its own so far. This page shows groups for people with chronic illness, where fatigue is widely understood, and a few gentle sessions you can simply listen to.

Can I attend for only part of a session?

Yes. You can leave when your energy runs out, and nobody will mind. Any movement in a session is optional, so stay within your own limits, because effort can make ME/CFS symptoms worse a day or two later.

Is there support for long Covid?

Yes. Long Covid has its own topic page on ShareWell.

Where can I find medical information about ME/CFS?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov/me-cfs) explains ME/CFS and pacing, and Solve M.E. (solvecfs.org) is a patient organization.
