Understanding multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, affects the brain and spinal cord and looks different in every person. Symptoms such as fatigue, numbness, vision problems and trouble walking can come and go, or build slowly over time, which makes planning ahead difficult.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with multiple sclerosis

Peer support can help with MS because many symptoms cannot be seen, so people are often told they look fine. A group understands the gap between how you look and how you feel.

What multiple sclerosis groups often cover

  • Fatigue that is more than ordinary tiredness
  • Fear of the next relapse or of getting worse
  • Symptoms that other people cannot see
  • Mood swings and changes in close relationships

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • People living with any type of MS
  • People who were recently diagnosed

Frequently asked questions

Is there an MS support group on ShareWell?

Not a separate one yet. The chronic illness groups on this page include people with MS and other conditions, and there are gentle sessions such as stretching alongside them.

Can I join on a bad symptom day?

Yes. Joining from home means you can attend lying down, with your camera off if the group allows it.

I was just diagnosed. Is it too soon?

No. Many people join soon after diagnosis, when questions and fear are at their strongest.

Where can I find medical information about MS?

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (nationalmssociety.org) is the main patient organization, and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (mymsaa.org) has a helpline at 800-532-7667.
