Understanding interstitial cystitis

Interstitial cystitis, also called IC or bladder pain syndrome, is a long-lasting condition that brings pain or pressure in the bladder and pelvic area. It means needing to urinate often and urgently, including through the night, and symptoms can flare after stress, certain foods, long periods of sitting, travel or sex.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with interstitial cystitis

Peer support can help with interstitial cystitis because bladder and pelvic pain are hard to bring up, even with close friends. A group is a safe place to talk about the parts of IC that stay private everywhere else.

What interstitial cystitis groups often cover

  • Flares set off by ordinary things like travel or sitting
  • Broken sleep from getting up through the night
  • Avoiding intimacy because of pain
  • Living with IC alongside other pain conditions

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
